Use cases

Get budget or peer support without being able to order it; change a committee’s mind without imposing; be heard on your first point, not your fifth.

Persuasion isn't pressure

The mistake most executives make when they lack formal authority is pushing harder — more data, more urgency, more repetition. What actually moves a room isn't volume, it's being understood. Robert Cialdini's research identified six principles that reliably move people to say yes: reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, authority, liking, and scarcity. In a corporate setting they translate directly — give value before you ask for it, secure small agreements before the big one, point to internal cases that already worked, lean on verifiable data and your own track record, find genuine common ground, and name the real cost of waiting. Influence without a title is a structure, not a personality trait, which means it can be built deliberately, one ask at a time.

The PREP Script

  1. Point: state your main point in one sentence — no build-up.
  2. Reason: give the one reason that matters most to the person you're asking, not the one that matters most to you.
  3. Example: back it with one concrete case, number, or precedent.
  4. Point: restate your ask clearly, as one specific request — not a general "let's discuss."

Before your next difficult ask, write out these four lines. If you can't fill in the Reason in terms the other person cares about, you're not ready for the conversation yet.
