Personal Branding

Get your real value recognized without having to sell yourself in every conversation.

Use cases

Be the obvious candidate for the next promotion; have people speak well of you when you’re not in the room; build a reputation beyond your immediate team.

Personal branding isn't self-promotion

The strongest professional reputations aren't built by talking about your work — they're built by what other people say about you when you're not in the room. If you're having to explain your value in every conversation, the issue usually isn't the quality of your work, it's that it isn't visible or memorable enough on its own. Personal branding is a deliberate seven-step process, not a personality trait some people have and others don't: define your purpose and who actually matters to your career, audit the brand you already have today (whether you built it on purpose or not), construct the narrative that connects the two, embody it consistently, communicate it through the channels you actually control, build real relationships with the people who open doors, and reassess it every year — because the brand that got you here isn't automatically the one that gets you to the next level.

The Reputation Audit

  1. Ask three people who know your work — a peer, someone who reports to you, and someone above you — to describe what you're known for, in one sentence each.
  2. Compare the three answers: where they overlap is your real current reputation, whether you intended it or not.
  3. Compare that to the reputation you actually want to have a year from now.
  4. Pick one visible, repeatable action this quarter — a fact you share, a result you make visible, a way you show up in meetings — that would close that specific gap.
