Clarity Phase

Resilience

Resilient leaders aren't the ones who feel the least under pressure. They're the ones who see the situation clearly, hold onto what matters, and keep adapting instead of freezing or performing a certainty they don't have.

Use cases

Leading a team through a reorg or a layoff round without becoming numb yourself; recovering your own energy and judgment after a project fails publicly; staying useful to your team during a period with no clear end date.

Resilience isn't toughness — it's how you process reality

In one of the most cited pieces of Harvard Business Review research on the topic, consultant Diane Coutu studied people and organizations that recovered well from serious setbacks, and found the pattern had almost nothing to do with optimism or grit in the popular sense. It came down to three things: a clear-eyed acceptance of reality (not denial, not forced positivity — an honest read of what's actually happening), a deep belief that life and work are meaningful even in hard periods (not a specific belief system, just a reason strong enough to keep going), and an ability to improvise with whatever's actually available, rather than waiting for ideal resources or conditions. Leaders who show real resilience aren't the ones who feel the least — they're the ones who let themselves see the situation clearly, hold onto what matters, and keep adapting instead of freezing or performing certainty they don't have.

The Reality Check

  1. Name a current setback or hard period you're navigating, in one honest sentence — no minimizing, no catastrophizing.
  2. \n
  3. Write down what still matters to you in this situation, even if the outcome isn't what you wanted.
  4. \n
  5. List what you actually have available right now (people, time, resources, options) — not what you wish you had.
  6. \n
  7. Choose one small, improvised next step you can take with what's on that list.
